You know the feeling. We all have it sometimes. There is something that you really want to do. Something that is important to you. It is something meaningful. Something that will be a real value add to your life and or your future. Yet, there you are sitting there and not getting it done. The stroke of genius has not struck. The jolt of energy has yet to arrive. The rush of commitment and passion lay idle. One day turns into the next and before you know it what you really wanted to do (and thought that you would have finished/started) is still undone. Why? Why is it that we can get somethings done and others we find very challenging to start let alone finish? What's the deal with motivation…Some might offer that you don't really know what you want. Others may say you don't really care about what you claim to care about. Someone familiar with psychology might call it fear or analysis paralysis. Others might count you out all together because you are not moving forward. But is it really any of those things? What is it that is actually standing in your way? Is it too big? Is it too small? Is your time too limited? Is your list of things to do too full? Are you unprepared? Do you feel unqualified? Are you unsure of what the first steps should be? It's true that some things in life are challenging to wrap our arms around. Moreover, somethings are challenging to keep our arms around and be consistent at. Our Leadership List is where we share inspiration, encouragement, development, and resources with our phenomenal leadership community. Join free today! Two-thirds of the American workforce are not engaged (aka motivated)…Regardless of what others think or feel. Regardless of what you thought and or felt in the past. Let's press pause and reset! Let me reassure you that first it is okay; and second you are not alone. You might even consider it the norm. According to a 2022 Gallup report, only "33% of Americans feel engaged at work." This means that approximately two-thirds of the American workforce are "not enthusiastic about their work and workplace." Consider this, on average, a full-time professional spends 2,080 hours (excluding holidays and vacation) working per year. The only thing that professionals spend more time on is sleep during the year. Therefore, if the number one item outside of sleeping is leaving two-thirds of Americans unenthused, it's understandable that motivation and drive are challenging for people. You're not like everyone else….However, disengagement and a lack of motivation is not something that we want to ascribe to or normalize for ourselves - regardless of the remainder of the population. Without taking anything from anyone else, the reality is that is not who you are; that's not me; that's not us (right). We are cut a little bit different. We're called a little bit higher. We feel the tug, push, and pull of impact, meaning, service, and legacy tapping us on the shoulders and calling our names! We're leaders with dreams, visions, mission, and purpose to fulfill. Access to information and opportunities were not equal or fair. Intellect, ambition, ability, promise were not enough. Instead they were over shadowed by waves of discrimination, fear, ill-will, and institutionalized racism. While there is still much work to be done and growth to be had today. It would be inappropriate not to recognize the strides and sacrifices made, and the changes that have occurred over time. The simple truth is that we are not where we were. Today, our ability to seize the day, own the moment, and step into the arena can be realized in ways that were not possible in the past.
